So, what is SCRC 2007?
Briefly: we're not really sure yet, it's still in the planning stages. Slightly expanded: the Student Circus Resurgence Convention is the gestating brain child of college circus students who want to bring together circus folk from all colleges for a three day convention. Hopefully, the event will be a wonderful way to skill share, network, and plan what we feel the future of circus should be. The tentative plan is to host this event at Hampshire College, in Amherst, Mass.

The Student Circus Resurgence Conference 2007 will be a two-day-long event for participators in the collegiate circus arts. Its primary purpose is to bring together the next generation of circus enthusiasts in order to enable connections between current and future circus creators, programmers and artists. The event hopes to encourage discussion of the current youth circus movement, to fuel creative collaborations and partnerships, and to inspire and evoke new ideas in this quickly growing performance art.
The SCRC will consist of a series of workshops, skills classes, open practices, panels and performances, all taking place side by side at Hampshire College.
The discussion portion of the conference will revolve around issues surrounding the creation and sustainability of grassroots circus troupes. Topics may include: defining disciplines; insurance and liability; collaborative show creation; planning a performance tour; circus history and scholarship.
The physical portion of the conference may includes classes in: stilting, juggling, acrobatics, dance, clowning, hula hoping, poi-spinning, staff twirling (also possibly fire arts and aerials). There will also be informal sessions (‘playtimes’) where any of these arts can be used in conjunction with each other and without formal structure.
There will be performances by professional troupes, possibly including the Bindlestiff Family Circus, Paradiso Duo, Hilary Klein, and Daniel Forlando (all Hampshire alumnae/i). There will also be ‘open performances’ in which SCRC attendees may perform: as solo acts, as small groups from within their respective school troupes, as full troupes, or as combinations of people from different schools.

If you're interested in developing the next generation of circus enthusiasts, is there any chance of your opening this up to high schoolers who are serious about circus arts?

Hi, I'm an Amherst native and a sophomore Cinema Studies major at Oberlin College. I'm doing a documentary this semester on the students in OCircus (our circus here), and since I'm going to be in the Valley for spring break and it sounds like some OCircus folk might be coming to this SCRC shindig, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind if I filmed some of the event?
Please email me at Christine.Gentes(at)Oberlin.edu
thanks, Chris

Hey Miche - sorry about pre-registration... we've had some paperwork issues. But online registration is pre-registration, as long as you're here for registration Saturday morning (9am-12pm) you're good!! Just make sure that you bring ID... Email circusfolkunite@gmail.com with how many people you're bringing if you'd like us to see if some of us can put you up...
And Debbie, it's not open to high-schoolers this year, unless they're already 18 - there are waivers to sign (I know, for just talking?! but it's true). There's a weird gap, I know, between the 'youth circus' for little kids and the semi-professional training programs for adults... college students are somewhere in that gap, too, which is part of the reason why we wanted to have this conference and try to get people together to help each other. Hopefully after this initial conference there will be more, on a larger scale, and we can include high-schoolers, too!

Contact me off-list and I can hep you find some of the training you will miss here. Simply Circus has had other high schoolers express interest, and may run some of these workshops in another forum.
